The Power Of Doing One More

In athletics, the difference between first and second place is often a small margin. In such a close contest, the amount of effort put in preparing for and going after the championship is almost identical. Usually, it is just a little extra effort that puts one over the top.
A great lesson can be learned from professional weightlifters. These athletes use repetitive sets of exercises to add muscle bulk when training for a contest. They understand that the first set is not the one that has the most impact. The set that does the most for them is the last set. It is the reason why people in gyms all over the country are always trying to do one more set. Proportionately speaking, that single exercise may have more impact on muscle growth than 75% of the workout. That is how powerful that act of doing one more is.
Over the years there have been many names used to describe this concept. The one that is most common is going the extra mile . It is a useful concept for transforming our lives. If we can apply this mindset to everything that we do, proportionately speaking, we will improve our lives substantially. All areas of our lives are instantly transformed with the mental shift. Our actions suddenly propel us towards our goals at a higher velocity.
Sales trainers hammer this concept in all their coaching. It is shown that the most productive sales people have the continual inner drive to make one more call. From a statistical perspective, an extra call a day results in about 240 more calls per year. This is the equivalent of 12 days worth of in person marketing calls in many industries. The top producer created an extra two weeks when compared to the average person. It becomes easy to see how they can average a few more sales per month.
This concept pushes one to do those things that others will not. This is exactly what the most successful people do. They are willing to do what is required to achieve the pre-determined results. Business people put in the hours to erect the systems that create the income desired. Husbands/Wives do the things that continually lets their spouse know how much they are loved and appreciated. World class athletes dedicate the time to training when they prefer to be elsewhere. Parents invest the time with their children teaching them values while providing a loving, safe haven for them to grow. Success in any endeavor necessitates a willingness to do what is required.
Most people remain in their comfort zone. In their quest to avoid pain, they cease to try new things. Unfortunately, one of the greatest ways to strengthen our capabilities is to expand this zone. The more that we are willing to stretch ourselves, the more we will grow. Often, do one more is uncomfortable. We want to stand pat on what we already accomplished. However, the ebb and flow of the universe dictates that nothing stands still. If we are not moving forward, then we are stepping backwards. Going the extra mile ensures that we at least keep pace with the rest of the world. Typically, it enables us to far out pace those around us.
This simple concept will turn an average life into an extraordinary one. It allows people to become stars in their own lives. Similar to athletics, the minimal difference in effort yields a tremendous difference in results. Each day builds upon the previous day. The cumulative effect over the course of a year is astounding. While it is almost invisible in the short term, the long term results puts us in an entirely different place. Just like compound interest does not have much impact in a years time, it s influence is huge when looked at over decades. The longer one goes the extra mile, the better one s life becomes.
